Special Effects and Production Design

Force Perspective Explosion

To create this explosion effect, I built a miniature version of the real-sized phone booth and utilized force perspective technique. I rigged the mini booth with vinyl tubing filled with fake blood/guts, which were propelled out of the tube using compressed air, creating the effect on a small scale (later edited to look large).

Blood Splatter Effect

Underneath the gash prosthetic, I wired vinyl tubing from the actor's neck to off-camera, where prosthetic blood was pumped into the tubing. This created a realistic "squirting" effect from the artificial wound.

POV Camera Rig

I constructed a torso-mounted camera rig out of PVC tubing and a fabric back brace to hold a camera directly in front of the face of the actors. This allowed us to collect high-angle footage of the actors running from the "creature."

Branch Impalation Effect

For this actor's death scene, I fabricated an artificial branch (laminated, then carved insulation foam) to match the natural foliage on set. It is held on via backpack-like straps underneath the actors vest to give the illusion of being impaled.

SFX Makeup

I applied all special effect makeup on set, which included a neck gash prosthetic, an "intestine spilling" wound, and “ghoul” infection makeup.

Fake Body Stunt Dummy

For this scene, I built a life-size human dummy to create the effect of this character being launched through the air. The dummy was crafted from a duct tape shell and stuffed with recycled paper, so it was light enough to be thrown and appear like a ragdoll.

2018 Competition Robot - Climbing Mechanism

The goals of the 2018 game were to collect milk-crate boxes from the ground and stack them on an elevated weigh-table, as well as perform a "pull up" on a bar at the end of the match. My team designed a two-stage elevator system, a set of streamlined intake arms, and a winch-driven climbing arm to complete all of the tasks.
